Adventure Time Cinnamon Bun Cookies

It’s summertime so to fill the long days at home we’ve been doing a lot of artwork. The Baby has been taking his favorite comic books and recreating the characters to practice his skills.

One of his new favorite books is Adventure Time Candy Capers by BOOM! Studios and the cover just happens to be drawn by Ian McGinty who recently drew a cover just for The Baby. Inspiration comes full circle!

Whenever the kids take interest in something, I like to participate by creating something for them out of food especially if it’s comics and food.

The cover of Candy Capers features Adventure Time’s Peppermint Butler and Cinnamon Bun, you can’t get two more tastier characters!

Cinnamon Bun Cookies

Cinnamon Bun was easy to translate into a cookie, just a straight forward cinnamon frosted cookie with a touch of crazy details. He truly looks worried that he’s going to be eaten.

As for Peppermint Butler I used my dyed dough technique that I’ve done in the past for Frozen cookies and Hulk cookies, it’s a simple way to get color with minimal icing work.

Make these Cinnamon Bun cookies together with Peppermint Butler cookies and add some Lumpy Space Princess cookies for good measure. It’s a lumping delicious Adventure Time cookie extravaganza!

Ingredients:

cookie ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch of salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1-1/2 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

frosting ingredients:
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
2-1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch of salt
2-3 Tablespoons milk

additional decoration:
white icing
black icing
heart sprinkles

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep a baking sheet with silpats or parchment.

In a bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer cream the butter and brown sugar. Add the egg and vanilla.

Slowly add the dry ingredients and mix well, when the dough pulls away from the side of the mixing bowl.

Separate the dough into two discs and placing in the fridge to chill.

When ready to bake, roll out the dough to about 3/8 of an inch. Use a 3-1/4″ round biscuit cutter to cut out circles, placing the dough onto the prepped cookie sheet.

Bake for 10 minutes, let cool on a wire rack.

For the frosting in the bowl of an electric mixer cream the butter, powdered sugar, cinnamon and salt, adding the milk as needed. Turn the mixer up and beat the frosting until you get a fluffy consistency. Use an offset spatula and frost the cooled cookies.

With a #2 tip pipe and black icing, pipe an oval in the center of the cookie. This will be Cinnamon Bun’s mouth. Fill in the oval and add curved lines along the top and the bottom of the oval.

Do the same for two black circular eyes, and then add his crazy eyebrows.

Use the white icing and a #2 tip to add in pupil and teeth details.

Place a pink heart quin in the mouth for his tongue.

Once the frosting and icing details set, Cinnamon Bun is ready to eat!

On the blue pants portion use the white icing and a #2 tip to pipe another triangle pointing downwards. Add red heart and circle sprinkles for his bow tie and two black dots with the icing for his buttons.

Once the glaze and the icing have set, your edible Peppermint Butler is ready!
