Adventure Time Peppermint Butler Cookies

It’s summertime so to fill the long days at home we’ve been doing a lot of artwork. The Baby has been taking his favorite comic books and recreating the characters to practice his skills.

One of his new favorite books is Adventure Time Candy Capers by BOOM! Studios and the cover just happens to be drawn by Ian McGinty who recently drew a custom variant Adventure Time cover just for The Baby. Inspiration comes full circle!

Whenever the kids take interest in something I like to participate by creating something for them out of food. It’s especially fun if what they love involves comics and food!

The cover of Candy Capers features Adventure Time’s Peppermint Butler and Cinnamon Bun, there’s no two tastier characters!

Peppermint Butler Cookies

Adventure Time Candy Capers cookies

For Cinnamon Bun I made a straight forward cinnamon frosted cookie, as for Peppermint Butler I find the taste of peppermint is hard to translate into food without being overwhelming so I made him out of a regular sugar cookie but then painted his details in a peppermint infused glaze. I wanted just enough mint flavor to get the point across.

This Peppermint Butler cookie uses the same dyed dough technique that I’ve used in the past for Frozen cookies and Hulk cookies, it’s a simple way to get color with minimal icing work.

Make these Peppermint Butler cookies and pair them with Cinnamon Bun cookies and Lumpy Space Princess cookies and you’re sure to have a fun Adventure Time feast! It’s mathematical!

Ingredients:

cookie ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
pinch of salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 Tablespoon vanilla
dark blue gel dye

glaze ingredients:
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1-2 Tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
red food gel dye

additional decoration:
white icing
black icing
heart sprinkles
circle sprinkles

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep a baking sheet with silpats or parchment.

In a bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg and vanilla.

Slowly add the dry ingredients and mix well, when the dough pulls away from the side of the mixing bowl.

Separate into two, wrapping one half up and placing in the fridge to chill.

For the second half add the dark blue food get dye and keep combining in the electric mixer until color is thoroughly mixed in.

Roll out the plain dough to about 3/8 of an inch. Use a 3-1/4″ round biscuit cutter to cut out circles. Using a knife, cut off the lower 1/3 of the cookie. That part will be discarded.

Place the dough onto the prepped cookie sheet.

For the lower part (Peppermint Butler’s pants) do the same thing with the blue dough. Roll out it out to 3/8 of an inch and use a 3-1/4″ round biscuit cutter to cut out circles. With a knife, cut off the upper 2/3 of the cookie. That part will be discarded.

Take the lower 1/3 and add it to the plain dough that is already on the cookie sheet. It should form a complete circle.

Do this for the rest of the dough, then bake for 10 minutes, let cool on a wire rack.

Once the cookies are cooled make the peppermint glaze by stirring together the powdered sugar, water and peppermint extract in a bowl. Using a clean kitchen paintbrush, paint small triangle around the edge of the plain part of the cookie. Peppermint Butler has one triangle at the top and three on each side pointing inwards.

Using the black icing and a #2 tip pipe round circles for eyes and a mouth.

On the blue pants portion use the white icing and a #2 tip to pipe another triangle pointing downwards. Add red heart and circle sprinkles for his bow tie and two black dots with the icing for his buttons.

Once the glaze and the icing have set, your edible Peppermint Butler is ready!
