Who are we kidding, I know baked corn dogs aren’t as good as fried ones, but I thought I’d give it a go. They baked up pretty well and turned out really tasty and the kids asked for more!
ingredients:
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 Tablespoons butter
1/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup cheddar cheese
1 egg + 1 Tb water for egg wash
4 hot dogs
4 lollipop sticks

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Using lollipop sticks, carefully push the stick halfway into the hot dog. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, slowly mix the flour, cornmeal, baking powder and salt. Add the butter, and slowly add the buttermilk. Add the cheese, and mix until you get a dough like consistency that pulls away from the bowl.

Take the dough and separate it into four equal pieces. For each piece, roll out into a rectangular shape, the length of your hot dog.
Roll the dough around the dog, shape to cover it.

Place on a baking sheet and brush with the egg wash for a nice color when it comes out of the oven. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-17 minutes.
Let cool slightly and you’re ready to serve! I liked to put condiments and side dishes in a muffin tin for the kids to dip into. It’s the perfect size!

Soooo cute–I better hide this photo from my three little ones or trust me, I’ll be making these daily, lol!! Love the little compartments with treats like grapes, goldfishies, etc. Great idea!!
So cute! I love the compartmentalized condiments too.
you always make eating look so fun at your place!
I’ve nominated you for the Kreativ Blogger award! Visit my blog for details.
your muffin tin condiment tray idea is so cute!
the dough for these corndogs is delicious – not heavy.
Hey, when do you use the egg wash, do you brush them before baking?
Yes! Sorry – right before you put them in the oven!
I don’t have any buttermilk as of now, is there an alternative?
@Robert 1/4 milk + 1 tsp lemon juice.
My goodness these are good!
I live in the UK and have never had corndogs before. I’ve seen them on American TV shows we have here though, and I’m always interested in ‘foreign’ food.
However, we do not have a deep fat fryer so I started looking for a baked option, and yours was the only one I could find that didn’t call for a box mix of some kind of cornbread (something we don’t get here!) And then I had to find cornmeal, and discovered we call it Polenta, lol.
My kids and I are eating them as I type! Thank you so much for these, it’d certainly going to be a standby recipe for those days when I haven’t the energy to make something elaborate.
Hi there Jenn!
Just wanted to thank you for this recipe! We made it today in our summer camp for Sticky Fingers Cooking. The kids were thrilled! We made them with homemade ketchup…fun day! Thanks for the inspiration!
