Brown Sugar Wookiee Cookies
When I sketch baking ideas, I’m always looking for something easy. I rarely over decorate with frosting, especially when it comes to cookies – and the lovely imprints of Williams Sonoma cutters keep inspiring me. Hulk cookies, Yoda cookies, Jawa cookies I did all of them simply with minimal decor, instead it was all about flavor.
This Chewbacca cookie is no exception. Flavorful brown sugar give him that trademark color and a simple pipe of black frosting for eyes give him life. But the real kicker is the teeth. Just simple piped white frosting, the tiny growl-y teeth is what made the recipients of these cookies ooh and ahh. Or…Arrrggghhnnn. Grrrhn. Gahr.
3 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
pinch of salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
1-1/2 cup brown sugar
In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, cinnamon, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
In the bowl of an electric mixer beat the butter and sugar until combined. Add the egg.
Slowly add in the flour mixture until it is incorporated. The dough will form quickly, and when it starts to pull away from the bowl, it’s done!
Split the dough into two and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill until you are ready to use.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with silpats.
Start rolling out the dough. I use powdered sugar instead of flour so it doesn’t get that dough-y taste and the sugar adds a slight sweetness. Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thick.
Use your cutter to cut out the shapes and transfer onto the silpat lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes then let cool on a wire rack.
Once they are cool, using a #3 tip pipe the eyes and nose in black frosting.
With a separate piping bag using a #2 tip pipe the white frosting in a zig zag pattern for the wookiee’s teeth.
If the Wookiee asks for it, let him have the cookie. It’s not wise to upset a Wookiee.
