Hello Kitty Oreos

It’s surprisingly easy to make Oreos at home. I know, why would you want to when you can get them for $1.99 at the market? Well, can you get SUPER KAWAII OREOS at the market?? I think not. That’s why I made Hello Kitty Oreos!

I love Hello Kitty – she has been my muse for cupcakes, waffles, more cupcakes, even Hello Kitty sushi! Hello Kitty definitely makes everything taste better!

Ingredients:

3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 egg

ingredients (filling):
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with parchment or silpats.

In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg until combined.

Slowly add the flour mixture until incorporated. The dough is ready once it pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 10-15 minutes so that it’s easier to roll out.

Roll out the dough to about 1/4″ thick. Use your cutter to cut out the shapes and transfer to the prepped baking sheet.

Bake for 9-10 minutes, depending on your oven and let cool on a wire rack.

Now on to the filling. In the bowl of an electric mixer cream the butter, sugar and vanilla on low. Once it starts to come together, crank the dial up to 6 until you get a nice fluffy filling reminiscent of…hey, an Oreo!

Using a piping bag, pipe the filling onto the backs of the cookies. Spread with an offset spatula, then press down on the filling with the top cookie.

I had no idea it was so easy to make oreos! And Hello Kitty ones are definitely better than store bought ones. Just last night I was thinking of breaking out my hello kitty waffle maker this weekend to make something cute with them.

So cute! I made inside-out Oreos (reverse fauxreos) with vanilla cookies and a ganache-type filling, and they were delicious. The cookie did not have that snap-crunch of Oreos, but I was surprised how good the flavor combination was. I’d like to try regular fauxreos as well.

ever since i saw this post earlier this year, i’ve been searching for those cookie cutters everywhere, and haven’t had any luck. Google keeps giving me a link to the Sanrio online shop, which doesn’t have them anymore. i’m so sad that they’ve been discontinued, and nowhere to be found on the internet. they’re the perfect size for these cookies!!

  26. Donna says:

omg this is SUPER CUTE! where did you get that hello kitty cookie cutter from? I NEED IT!

  27. lynne says:

  28. Robyn says:

Very cute! Made these tonight with my Vader cookie cutter and they came out great, no need to re-press. I am sending them to work with my husband tomorrow, along with some matcha Yodas and Fetts. They will be doing a Christmas charity event for the Ronald McDonald House, so I thought I would contribute some snacks along with our toys. The cookies will go along well with the office decor, there are life-sized Star Wars statues all over the building as well as Star Wars Pinball and some other things. I think the chocolate cookies turned out better than the others, but maybe it was my fault as a first attempt.

  29. Jessica D. says:

Wow these are so cute! I wanna try, but I’m gonna use a bear/panda cookie cutter instead. I have a question though — can I use a hand mixer instead of a stand mixer? I’m new to baking and don’t want to invest in a stand mixer just yet.

  30. Gwynne says:

Ohhhh! Yes hello kitty oreos for me ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. Eruiz says:

Can I use regular Hershey’s cocoa powder or will not be dark enough?

  32. justJENN says:

    @Eruiz
I’m not a fan of the flavor of Hershey’s cocoa, it is def not as dark or rich as Valrhona. I’m sure it’ll do in a pinch!

  33. Telly says:

Each time I’ve made these the dough turns out coarse and crumbly ๐Ÿ™ I don’t know if it’s the recipe or I have really bad luck!

  37. Hello! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any trouble with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing many months of hard work due to no data backup.
Do you have any methods to prevent hackers?
