Hello Kitty – Tippy & Cathy cupcakes

Since the Hello Kitty chocolate heads were a bust (har har) I decided to go simple and make some very easy fondant toppers. I always tell people, working with fondant CAN be easy. You don’t have to go over the top with it, a lot can be said with a little. While it’s true, I do work with brightly colored fondant, (case in point: Superhero Cupcakes) sometimes you can convey an image simply…with white.

I made up a batch of Ovaltine cupcakes, which were delicious of course, but so dark. I wanted to play up the dark and light aspect of them and be subtle with the cuteness.

I took some plain white fondant and just used cookie cutters to cut out ‘Tippy’ and ‘Cathy’. (Those are Hello Kitty’s friends, for those in the know. I know entirely too much about Sanrio, obviously.)

The size was perfect to top a cupcake and the image wasn’t over powering, just clean and sweet. Exactly what I wanted.

I hand frosted some cupcakes, no piping just freeform – with chocolate frosting and some with cream cheese frosting just so that the box had a nice balance.

Well defined cookie cutters are great for fondant work especially if you don’t want to spend hours cutting by hand.

These would be great for a tea party! A classic black and white with just enough fun to make you smile!

Any tips for how to apply frosting and make it look pretty? For the life of me I cannot make my frosting look smooth and pretty. It always turns out delicious but is either overly runny or, if I try refrigerating it to stiffen it a bit, it’s too hard to spread. HELP!

Also: I saw the craziness on Twitter of that chick trying to steal credit for your pics and recipes! Glad you got her to stop. 🙂

Use an offset spatula and just…practice. Get it as even or as smooth as you like. If you want it uniform, fill a piping bag with frosting and you can pipe a bit on the top of the cupcake – leave it at that or again use and offset spatula and spread it until you get it how you like. Personally, I kind of like the rough, hand frosted look, something about it seems old skool to me.

I have the offset spatula but I guess I just need practice. Haha. I love love love your blog. Thanks for the advice!

Love your blog, but here comes a dumb dumb question. do you buy the fondant or make it, if so how do you make fondant? After watching all the cake decorating shows that use fondant on every cake they make, it looks kinda thick and would be tough to cut and eat, but guess not, or they wouldn’t all be using it. Thanks I’ll be waiting to hear from you.

You can make your own fondant, or buy it premade in the store. You can even buy pre-dyed fondant.
The fondant is only as thick as you roll it, so if you want it thinner, simply go at it with the rolling pin until you get it to the desired thickness.

Sorry, it’s just luck of the draw. I go to Sanrio stores whenever I can, but product always changes…

Hi, I’m from Brazil and I work with cupcakes. I’m a huge fan of your site and designs !
So, here in my country, it’s really hard to find those cute cutters you guys have in the US. Most of them aren’t sold here. And I was wondering if you could tell me the cutters name or brand, so I could import them. Oh, and, by the way, do you have any store of your own, where you sell your cupcakes and the cupcakes supply?
    Thanks a lot !

I am always wondering everytime I see these cupcakes as to why one the close-ups of the two the heads have a lil’ extra hump on top? Am I the only one who noticed?

  13. justJENN says:

    @devon
If you look closely at the cutter, you will see that there is a piece of plastic that runs across the width of the cutter. This is to keep the ‘eyes’ in place. Even the lightest touch seems to imprint on whatever is being cut out.

  14. devon says:

ahh, thank you for the explanation. i look through your blog again and again and always wonder. life is complete.

Could you tell me where you got the small Hello Kitty cookie cutter? I’ve been looking on the web, but have not found anything like what you used. Also, I’m interested in the lovely Italian biscuits – I’d like to use them on cupcakes. Thanks!
