Homemade Ice Cream Bon Bons

When I was a kid my grandparents always seemed to have a container of bon bons in their freezer. Tiny little bites of creamy ice cream encased in a magical shell. How did the ice cream get in there, was it magiv? Whatever it was, I loved it and it was a cool and delicious treat whenever I visited.

Eventually bon bons went out of fashion and you rarely see them in the ice cream section. So I decided to try making them myself. They are incredibly easy to make and the kids can’t get enough.

Homemade Ice Cream Bon Bons are great to make if you have leftover ice cream. WHAT. Who has leftover ice cream??

Homemade Ice Cream Bon Bons

Ingredients:

vanilla ice cream
6 ounces bittersweet chocolate
1 teaspoon oil

Instructions:

Line a small baking pan or dish with parchment paper. Using a mini ice cream scoop (1.5 Teaspoon disher works best) scoop out small balls of ice cream – the rounder the better – and put them on the pan. Place the pan in the freezer so that the ice cream balls set. You may need to go back and forth in between scoops, depending on how warm the weather is.

Add the chocolate to a double boiler. Once the chocolate has melted, stir in the oil. You won’t notice it or taste it, it just makes the chocolate even out and gives it a nice sheen.

Dipping Ice Cream Bon Bons

Let the chocolate cool slightly. Take the frozen ice cream balls out of the freezer. Using two forks, dip the ice cream balls into the chocolate, coating them completely. Work fast, the ice cream will start melting and the chocolate will start to harden before you know it. The tray may need to be put back in the freezer between dipping.

Keep the bon bons in a sealed container the freezer until ready to serve.

    Genius! I’ve made chocolate-covered everything, but it never occurred to me to do ice cream! Which is strange, because as a kid I worshiped chocolate-covered ice cream bars and the “magic shell” stuff, so you’d think it would be one of the first things to spring to mind when I’m dreaming up desserts.

    Just until they are frozen which will only take about 10 minutes, but you can keep them in the freezer longer of course.

    When I tried making chocolate covered ice cream when I rolled the ice cream in the chocolate it didn’t completely stick, what am I doing wrong? I used milk chocolate and .vanilla store bought ice cream…I did let the formed balls chill for about two hours and let the chocolate slightly cool before rolling…

    Hm. Did you freeze the ice cream balls first before you dipped them? Oh wait. Your comment says you did. I’m not sure. Just make sure the chocolate isn’t overly warm, that sometimes causes it not to stick…
