Darth Vader Valentine’s Day Hug Cookies to Support Cookies for Kid’s Cancer

For me, baking equals happiness. Handing out something you’ve created and seeing the joy that it brings people makes it all worth it, and when baking is coupled with giving to a good cause, it makes it even better.

My friend Julie at The Little Kitchen is hosting her annual Good Cookies Food Bloggers’ Valentine’s Event, where food bloggers show their support by helping to raise funds and awareness of childhood cancers for Cookies for Kid’s Cancer. In the past three years they’ve raised over $63,000 for C4KC!

After signing up and donating, I started to think about what recipe I wanted to create. Since this fundraiser benefits kids, Star Wars was an easy answer. Add in some Valentine’s Day love and I came up with fun Darth Vader Hug Cookies. What can I say, I thought it would be a hilarious juxtaposition to have the Sith Lord holding a candy heart that said, “dream date.”

If you like my recipe, consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Cookies for Kids’ Cancer fundraising page. Our goal is to raise at least $3000. Because these three companies: Dixie Crystals, Mediavine and OXO have each pledged to match our donations raised through this campaign up to $3000!

Together we can make a difference for kids battling cancer!

Darth Vader Valentine’s Day Hug Cookies to Support Cookies for Kid’s Cancer

Ingredients:

you’ll need:
Darth Vader cookie cutter (from ThinkGeek)
small conversation heart candies
icing

cookie ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 egg

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with parchment or silpats.

In a bowl, whisk the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg until combined.

Slowly add the flour mixture until incorporated. Once the dough starts to pull away from the sides the dough is ready.

Split into two and wrap in plastic wrap, chill in the fridge until ready to use.

Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Use the cookie cutter to cut and press the shapes, then transfer them onto the prepped baking sheets.

Make a small cut on both sides of the dough, just under the arm. This will make the arms easier to fold over.

Place a piping tip in the center of the cookie. Carefully fold the arms over to grasp the piping tip.

Bake for 10 minutes, let cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, slowly slide out the piping tip.

Use icing to hold the conversation hearts in place between the cookie’s hands.
