Star Wars Severed Wampa Arm Cake

Today is May 4th—that’s right—it’s Star Wars Day! MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU.

I have a lot of Star Wars recipes on this blog but nothing will compare to this, a severed Wampa arm made out of cake! There’s nothing more celebratory than an edible severed arm. At least in the Star Wars universe.

A wampa is an ice creature that captured Luke when he was on Hoth. Using the force, the young Jedi gets his lightsaber and slices off the wampa’s arm to make his escape. This is my version…in cake.

Are you disgusted? You should be because it looks very real. Much to O.G.’s dismay I put it in her fridge and she freaked out. She ate it of course but she kept saying it was ‘making her gag,’ so she ate it with her eyes closed. However, she did say it was delicious but emphasized, “Why can’t you ever just make me a regular cake?” Ah, story of my life.

Star Wars Severed Wampa Arm Cake

Ingredients:

6 egg yolks
3/4 cup sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup cake flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
6 egg whites
Red gel food coloring

decoration ingredients:
powdered sugar for dusting
1 cup Guava jelly
Whipped Cream Cheese Frosting
2 cups sweetened coconut
Chocolate bars

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prep a 10×15 inch jellyroll pan with parchment, lightly buttered.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks and sugar until light. Add the vanilla. Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt and add it to the yolk mixture. While mixing, add in the red gel food coloring until combined. Set aside.

In a separate bowl whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold the egg whites into the red batter until combined.

Pour the batter into the prepped jelly roll pan, using a spatula to even it all out. Bake for 8-10 minutes depending on your oven.

Get a CLEAN dishtowel and dust it with powdered sugar. Turn the warm cake onto the towel. Peel back and pull off the parchment paper.

Cut about 3-inches off the end of the cake and slice that into 1-inch wide pieces, these will be the Wampa fingers. Set aside for later.

Roll the cake up with the towel a the LONG way. What you are doing is trying to form the rolled shape. Let cool in the rolled up towel for 20-30 minutes.

Whisk the jelly to get it nice and loosened up, also reserve about 3 Tablespoons for later. Guava jelly is light, almost clear and always makes for good ‘blood’ substitute (Game of Thrones horse heart cupcakes) but a dark jelly will work also.

Carefully unroll the cake, and spread the jelly onto the cake. Now roll the cake up again. Quite obviously NOT with the towel. Place the rolled cake seam side down onto a platter.

Arrange the Wampa ‘fingers’ you cut at the end of a platter so they look like a hand.

Frost the cake arm and fingers with the whipped cream cheese frosting.

Getting between the ‘fingers’ can be tricky, just use a small offset spatula and take your time.

Take the coconut and pat it around the frosted cake and fingers, like fur.

For the fingernails, cut a thick chocolate bar into chunky pieces and placed them on the end of the fingers.

Finally, for oozing Wampa blood take the reserved jelly and pour it on the cut end of the arm. Now your Wampa is ready to serve!

:O AMAZING! As the Wampa is a very nightmare-inducing creature, IMO, I think this is a rather therapeutic recipe! (What better way to get rid of your fears, than to EAT them!?). Definitely adding this to my list of things to try to make. Happy Star Wars Day! 😉

  2. Genius! I do love a bit of disgusting fun food. Shall show to my boys later. May the fourth be with you!

i know a nine year old that’s going to be very excited to get this cake for his birthday!!! He’s picky though, and not sure he likes coconut…might have to be a wookie or ewok’s arm with choco flakes instead…are substitutions allowed?

I think I like your O.G. just a little more today. I agree it’s totally gross, but in the interest of science and all things Food Network, I too would have to close my eyes to eat it 🙂

This is so cool! Very creative and I love it! One suggestion…use chocolate covered bugles for the claws.

    @Dpg Have fun with it!

What are the dimensions of the jellyroll pan you used for this recipe?

This cake was so easy to do, and I was impressed by the detailed instructions on how to roll a jelly roll cake(which I had never done). I missed Star Wars Day, but made it immediately after for a friends birthday.

Thanks for the party stopping recipe.

Hi there! I made a gluten free version of the Wampa cake and the delicious whipped cream cheese frosting, and it all turned out great. But what kind of gel food coloring did you use? I bought a small tube of the Betty Crocker gel coloring, and my cake was a pale pink. I blogged my baking experience and thought I would share here. Thanks for the recipe!

Hi Kimberly, The food coloring I use is from Ateco, here’s what it looks like: http://amzn.to/1JI7Zcj

Thanks for sharing this idea! So fun!

I’ve never made a roll cake before, so the instructions were helpful. It turned out great – looks awesomely gruesome – but the filling I chose (mango – couldn’t find guava) combined with the frosting recipe I used (similar to yours) is just way too sweet. Thankfully, this was a test cake before the Star Wars themed event I am planning on bringing this to.

If I can’t find guava, any suggestions on making this a bit less sweet?

I don’t have kids but I’ve been doing Star Wars Day baking for a few years for the entertainment of my husband (the big-time Star Wars fan who got me into it) and my co-workers. I just made this cake today and it looks awesome. I hope it will hold up in the fridge for a few days until May 4.

I took Joe’s chocolate-dipped bugle suggestion for the claws and they look great. I wanted to minimize extra sugar so I used unsweetened coconut. The coarsest texture I could get came out looking more fuzzy than furry – oh well. I also cut down the sugar in the batter a little. No guava jelly here in Canada so I used apricot jam with red food colouring mixed in. I’ll find out how sweet it is overall on Wednesday, but the icing isn’t too sweet on it’s own so I’m hoping that the remedial action I took with the batter and the coconut will offset the sweetness of the jam. My batter turned out pink too, but the jam is a good colour.

I’d never done a jelly roll cake before. It stuck to the towel like glue, despite the powdered sugar – maybe I was doing it wrong. I used a 10×15″ cookie pan which had a lip all the way around instead of buying a jelly roll pan.

Thanks for the recipe! I’ve made your Princess Leia cupcakes a couple of times too.
