Vampire Bite Cupcakes for Amber Benson

Amber Benson asked me to make cupcakes, the only requirement was that they were to be red velvet because it was for the horror movie she’s directing called Shevenge. Hm, I seem to be asked to do a lot of red velvet for horror lately. Sharknado cake, anyone?

Since these were probably going to sit on a film set all day, instead of the traditional red velvet cream cheese frosting I went with a buttercream because it’s more stable. I wanted to make these little minis adorably gory so while I added a few signature hearts to some of the cupcakes, the others I added a little “bite.” Turns out, very in theme with Shevenge.

Oddly, it didn’t even occur to me that I decided to go with vampire cupcakes for a Buffy The Vampire Slayer alum. Irony!

If you want to recreate a vampire bite, a toothpick and some dye are as close as you can get. Let me tell you, red food gel dye is a shoo-in for actual blood as the stains on my hands can attest to. Bloody teeth marks never looked so cute.

frosted cupcakes
red food gel dye

Instructions:

Place some red food gel dye into a shallow dish, do not dilute.

Dip a toothpick into the dye and poke two holes into the frosting of the cupcake.

Using the toothpick as a brush, add more gel dye to seemingly seep out of the poked holes.

Eat these cupcakes before the vampires finish them off.
