Inside The King’s Hawaiian Factory

When I was a kid I remember sitting in the back of my Grandpa’s old Datsun, I could barely see out the window but I knew whenever we were on Western Avenue because I could smell the fresh bread being baked at the King’s Hawaiian factory.

Growing up, every week my mom would buy the round loaf of sweet bread that came in the orange bag. We’d take a big knife and cut off chunks for breakfast in the morning. It was so puffy and sweet, I always wondered how the bread was made and what went on in that magical factory that we’d drive past.

Cut to some thirty years later and I finally got to find out. For the first time in the 60 year history of the company, King’s Hawaiian opened it’s doors to non-family members. Much like Wonka opening his gates to the public, as one of the chosen few I felt like I had won my golden ticket.

We got to see the bread being made from start to finish, from the mixing, to proofing and into the giant ovens. The smell took me right back to that childhood memory of driving by the factory. We watched as the little loaves of bread travelled through the maze of conveyors and headed to packaging.

For legal reasons there were several spaces where we weren’t allowed to take pictures, but I still saw enough to know I would like to move in and live in a house of bread forever. Seeing the process happen was just like being invited into Wonka’s factory, while there were no chocolate waterfalls or Oompa Loompas there were definitely hard workers producing a quality product, doing it all with the aloha spirit.

At the end of the tour we were offered the Holy Grail, the rare treat of tasting fresh bread right out of the oven! I can’t even explain how delicious impossibly fresh sweet bread is right off the line. To top it all off they offered us a spread of the same high quality butter they use in their secret recipe. Absolute heaven. In Hawaii they call that ‘broke da mouth’, indescribably good!

As the little breads traveled along the conveyor belts I remembered the words of Mark Taira as he told us of his father Robert’s first little bakery on King Street in Hilo, which was how he got the name for the bakery. Robert was an entrepreneur and had a vision, he saw the future for his family on the mainland with his unique product, always keeping in mind the aloha spirit throughout his business’ growth.

Today King’s Hawaiian has moved beyond the round loaves of Portuguese bread, to sliced sandwich bread, hot dog buns, sandwich rolls and more, as well as a large restaurant bakery in Torrance and a casual take out called the Local Place.

Just like my own childhood, I carry on the tradition and also feed my kids King’s Hawaiian bread. I make a special visit to the bakery every week to pick up the freshest bread and pastries, have dinner or order their now legendary King’s Hawaiian Paradise Cake – something that has become a tradition for all of our major family events. I even memorialized our love of the cake by drawing a picture of O.G. HOLDING a piece of Paradise Cake ON a Paradise Cake. It doesn’t get better or tastier than that. I’m also proud to announce that I’m now a featured blogger on the new King’s Hawaiian website. I feel like part of the ohana already!

At the end of the tour the Taira family treated us to a private food truck fest and a buffet of King’s Hawaiian desserts aka my dream come true. To make our trip even more special they sent us home with a giant box of every product made by King’s Hawaiian! Now here’s your chance to get your own taste of Hawaii, King’s Hawaiian is giving away one of these giant gift boxes to one of my lucky readers! Check out all that good stuff!

My favorite way to eat King’s Hawaiian rolls is to get the small packs of 4 and use them to make spam and egg breakfast sliders. Spam, a fried egg and some american cheese fits perfectly on the little set of 4 rolls. And they are the best when you throw the rolls down on the fan to get a little bit of golden brown on em before you assemble.

  40. Missy says:

I love Hawaiian bread. I grew up with it, too. But I would only get it once a year. I lived in NJ most my life and the only place that had it, was in Florida. So every year, when we drove down to Orlando to our timeshare, we would stop at Winn-Dixie or Publix to get our groceries for the week, we’d pick up a couple loaves of the sweetest bread we’d ever eat! It was then the only time we’d be able to eat it because NJ didn’t stock it until many years later.
My mom would take the bread knife and slice off these large slices, toast them up nice and golden and then put some butter on it. MMM soooo good! Later we would get the rolls, too, and split them in half and toast them as well w/ butter.
As an adult in NYC, we finally got them at the local grocery store – usually just the rolls though, I miss the big loaves here, but i still split them in half and eat them with butter, just like mom made ’em! And even more delicious, I make them with truffle butter now!! Highly recommend this! Though I can eat them straight out of the bag if I can’t wait long enough for them toast up! Haha!
When I’m out in LA next, I might have to find this factory and buy up the sandwich bread and loaves! We still don’t have the sandwich bread here. Thank you for the memories!

In the tradition of many hawaiian children, our family eats King’s a variety of ways, but my husband tells me that as kids the only way to eat the was to flatten them in the palm of your hands until they were flat and eat them like a hawaiian tortilla! Just thought I’d share 🙂

  102. Lindsey C. says:

    Hello!!!
mmm, I love me some King’s Hawaiian!
After moving to Texas it’s kind of a hard product to find. So we reserve it for special occasions now and it is SO delicious every time I have it.

    Yum.

  108. Jennifer says:

I buy little four packs of rolls on my lunch break and munch on one or two (or all four) through the rest of the day. My grandma got me hooked on them. My mom and I would bring her groceries or dinner three to four times a week and always at the top of the list were Kings Hawaiian rolls. We’d share them while we watched crazy Mexican game shows. Good memories. 🙂

  109. Back in the days when I lived in Oahu, King’s Hawaiian sweet bread is very common.

As a child, my favorite way to eat KH Original Sweet Round was as is out of the bag. I remember tearing the bad open as a child with my brother and friends and fighting over the last piece of the outer crust (which in my opinion was the best part). After the outside layer was gone, we would go and eat what’s left with a glass of milk or a can of Hawaiian Sun punch until all we had was the metal pan. Then we used the metal pan for shenanigans around the neighborhood.

Now, that I’m older, my palette is more complex so I use the KH sandwich slices to make french toast (KH bread makes french toasts CRAZY…) and also use the KH dinner rolls to make sliders using grilled spam or Portuguese sausage and some fried egg. If my wife isn’t home, I eat it out of the bag.

I can proudly say that Kings Hawaiian bread was part of my daily diet growing up in HI, and as a grown up in S.CA.

  110. Jim Winstead says:

we use sliced KH all the time for french toast, but my favorite way of having it has to be toasted with nutella on it. decadent.

  111. Jaime says:

I love to eat it straight out of the bag. I LOVE the round loafs in the pan. It reminds me of my childhood. Now my daughter is 2 and loves KH bread also. I get her the small rolls so it’s just the right size.

  112. Sophia says:

I used to rip the bread with my hands and dip it into hot chocolate. Now I am much older and more civilized, I still do it the same way. Why change?

  113. soha molina says:

I love to heat them up top with butter and honey and eat them,

Hi Jenn! My mom’s side is local.. And she and my dad brought that breakfast tradition with them and shared it with me as a kid. I’m 30 years old and I still love making that for breakfast!

  116. ella says:

I’ve never actually had King’s Hawaiian bread!

  117. MelissaM says:

Being in Texas, there isn’t a lot of King’s Hawaiian bread here, so my first exposure to it is fairly recent. We only get the buns and occasionally a full round loaf of the stuff. It is definitely a treat when I can find it.

  129. Jennifer Salzberg says:

The only answer is EVERY WAY! There is nothing I won’t do with King’s Hawaiian. Straight from the bag, made into a sandwich, toasted with butter, made into french toast, dried and ground to use as crumbs, etc. You name it, I have probably done it!

  130. Monika says:

We love to eat them with ham and cheese! Rolls, buns, the big round bread, whatever. A little butter, too, or some garlic spread. Baked in the oven so the cheese melts….mmmmm!!

The way I used to have it as a kid … Fried in butter. 🙂

  135. Craig Daniel says:
