Batman cookies

Much like Batman’s arsenal, I’ve created many Batman related things on this blog. Bat-cupcakes, Bat-lollipops, Bat-cakes and even Bat-pumpkins. He has truly become my muse and that’s mostly because so many people I know love him.

The Baby (who should probably be called Kid2.0 at this point) is very specific about his favorite superheros. His top three faves are Batman, Dr. Fate and Iron Fist. I’m guessing he’s got a thing for masks. In any given situation Batman is always number one. He can go into an extensive dialogue on Batman’s greatness or simply just reason with, “because he’s awesome.”

During one of our many nights drawing, he sat down and decided to write “The Guide to Batman” which was nothing more than pages upon pages of Batman’s face. If there ever was a 100 page guide that was needed in this world, I’d say that’s the one.

The Guide to Batman

Batman is beloved in every medium, my friends Dr. Andrea Letamendi and Brian Ward have a podcast called The Arkham Sessions, dedicated to the analysis of the characters in BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES. Educational and fun, it’s a great listen for fans who’d love to get an in depth look at their favorite Batman characters.

While everyone has their favorite type of Batman, my favorite is Bruce Timm’s Batman. Batman: Brave and the Bold is one of my favorite series and I still watch it regularly to this day. I love the clean lines and angular style of Bruce Timm’s art and let’s face it, it translates pretty well into cookies too! A combined chocolate and vanilla cookie make up Batman’s complex enigma…or they just taste great together, that too. Just like Batman, these Bat-cookies won’t let you down.

I am vengeance, I am the night, I am a cookie.

Ingredients:

chocolate cookie ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

vanilla cookie ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions:

Make both doughs separately by first whisking the dry ingredients in a bowl.

Then in the bowl of an electric mixer cream the butter and the sugar. Add the egg and vanilla.

Add the flour mixture until combined. When it pulls away from the sides of the bowl, the dough is ready.

Make the chocolate dough, then the vanilla dough and wrap up the doughs separately in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until you are ready to use.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with silpats.

I found this Batman cookie cutter from CookiePrints on etsy. It’s a great cutter that gives a beautifully detailed impression. As with most cutters, make sure it’s well floured so the dough won’t stick.

Batman Cookie prep

Roll out the chocolate dough to about 3/16 inch thick to make sure you capture all the detail. Press the cookie cutter into the dough.

Take a small knife and run it around Batman’s mask, separating the cookie into two pieces so the mouth is separate.

Move Batman’s face to the silpat and keep going and cutting out just the Batman mouth area.

Do the same for the vanilla dough, cutting out the mouth area then moving it into the chocolate face that you cut out previously, fitting in just like a puzzle piece. These won’t spread much, just enough to interlock the two flavors of cookie.

Bake for 10 minutes and let cool on a wire rack. Once cooled pipe white frosting for Batman’s eyes.
