Buttermilk Baguette French Toast
I love buying French baguettes on my weekly market trips but they tend to dry out rather fast. When that happens I like to slice them up for a no fuss, a simple comforting breakfast.
ingredients:
1 baguette
5 eggs
1-1/2 cups buttermilk
1 cup whole milk
3 Tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla
pinch of salt
butter for pan
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9″x13″ baking dish.
Slice the baguette into 1/2 inch slices and lay it in the prepped baking dish, overlapping.
In a bowl mix together the eggs, buttermilk, whole milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt. Pour the custard over the baguette slices.
Bake for 30 minutes until brown and bubbly.
Serve with syrup or jam while warm.
Yum–made this today and loved the flavor. Just one thing–I was left with dry spots on the bread and a lot of cooked eggy stuff in the pan…do you do something like turn the bread or let it soak a little before baking?
Thanks!
@Andy you definitely can toss it up a little if you didn’t get all the bread covered!
