Captain America Apple Hand Pies

Hand pies are glorious because they’re little individual pies that well, you can eat with your hands! Why have regular hand pies when you can eat one in the shape of Captain America’s face?? Truly the best option.

When the Marvel cookie cutters came out my mind was filled with ideas for recipes…and none of them had to do with cookies. Williams Sonoma, I’ve got to hand it to you. First Star Wars and now Marvel, I feel like my culinary nerd life is complete.

I was inspired by good ol’ Cap and make super simple apple pies out of him. The beauty of the smallness of these pies is that you don’t even have to pre-cook the filling. The apples will bake and bubble perfectly all on their own in the oven. This recipe is so easy, with just a few ingredients for filling you’ll be surprised at how tasty these are.

Raise a glass of milk to this, the super soldier of pies!

Ingredients:

pie dough
2 granny smith apples, peeled, cored, chopped into 1/2″ pieces
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons cold butter, chopped into tiny shards
egg wash (1 egg whisked with 1 Tablespoon water)

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with silpats or parchment.

These cutters are amazing because they don’t stick to dough and have great detail. There’s even a cleft in Steve Rogers chin!

On a floured surface roll out half of the pie dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out simple outlines for the bottom of the pies and place on the prepped baking sheets.

Onto each one place about 2 teaspoons of chopped apples (these cutters are SMALL thus the small amount of filling). On top of that put a few shards of butter and sprinkle about 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar.

Roll out the second half of the pie dough, again to 1/4-inch. This time cut out the Captain America heads with the full detail. Place these on top of the filling. Push the edges to close.

Brush the tops with egg wash. Bake for 15-20 minutes depending on your oven, until just browned. Let cool on a wire rack.

Totally unrelated to this post, but I just saw this recipe for Root Beer Waffles on the TJ’s website and thought you might like it:

    2 TJ’s Large Eggs
    1/2 cup TJ’s Canola Oil
2 cups Root Beer (Hansen’s or Virgil’s are perfect)
    3 1/2 cups TJ’s Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix
Preheat the waffle iron. In a large mixing bowl, combine the eggs and oil, mix until the yolks are incorporated into the oil. Slowly pour in the root beer, and mix. Begin to add in the waffle mix about a cup at a time, and mix lightly (small clumps are A-okay). Once all is mixed together and relatively smooth, pour into the waffle iron, in between half cup and 3/4 cup batches, and cook until golden brown (about 3 minutes). If you happen to have any waffles left over, place them in a re-sealable bag, and toss into the freezer. They make excellent toaster waffles.
    Serves: 5 – 6
    Cooking Time: 15 – 20 Minutes
