Crispy Rice Ball (aka yaki onigiri)
This is ‘street’ food. Just rice balls, tossed on the grill, basted with soy sauce. Couldn’t be easier.
ingredients:
cooked rice
soy sauce
sugar (if you want)
Take your cooked rice and form it into onigiri balls. You can use a ‘maker’ like I did, or just form it with your hands and some saran wrap.
Heat up your grill, or you can even use a grill pan, up to you. Put the rice balls on the hot grill, baste with soy sauce, turn over and baste some more. I also sprinkle with a little sugar, which gives it more of a teriyaki flavor, but you don’t have to. Turn and baste until the rice is crispy and brown. That’s it!!
Heeeeeeeeeey…what is that grill contraption thingie? I think I need to get me one of those!!
Should I use a certain rice, like short grain or cal rose rice? I have a feeling long grain will not be as tasty. This white girls needs some help! Alison
Hey question #2…do you think this would work with a George Forman type of grill thingee?!
What kind of rice do you use and how did you cook it?
Jenny: It’s an indoor plug in grill!
Cheryl: I don’t know if a George Foreman would work, since that thing has a top and bottom and I don’t know how well it would crisp both side. Who knows, give it a try!
Alibaba & Jen: Use a short grain rice. Long grain doesn’t stick together well. I use a Japanese rice cooker, but you can do it over the stove. Worse comes to worse you can go to a Japanese restaurant, order rice for take out and make these at home, ha!
i’ve tried this recipe twice, and both times my rice balls fell apart! am i not packing it in (hahaha) enough?
