Daredevil & Irredeemable cupcakes for Mark Waid

Mark Waid is evil. No…Mark Waid writes comics. Wait, wait – there is so much more to that sentence. Mark Waid has written titles for some of the most iconic characters in the history of comics: The Flash, Superman, Captain America, Justice League just to name a few.

He was also kind enough to give The Baby a big chunk of his personal Batman toy collection, so for that I am eternally grateful.

This weekend there was a very special surprise party to celebrate his birthday and you know, comics and cupcakes go hand in hand!

For his birthday I wanted to highlight two of Mark Waid’s current (and my favorite) books, Daredevil and Irredeemable.

Mark Waid Daredevil Cupcakes

This new run of Marvel’s Daredevil is a favorite of mine and the exploration of Matt Murdock’s character from Mark Waid’s point of view is fresh, modern and all consuming. I can’t put it down! Even if you’re not familiar with the character it’s easy to pick up and get right into the stories.

Mark Waid’s Irredeemable for Boom Studios is an interesting exploration into a superhero who turns into a supervillian. The character of Plutonian gives comic fans a different take on psychology of superheroes.

Both books are currently ongoing and a huge part of Mark Waid’s career, so I thought they’d be good design choices for the cupcakes. The Daredevil and Plutonian images I chose were bold and iconic and also tasty! Happy birthday Mark Waid!

Ingredients:

red candy melts
red frosting
sanding sugar
cupcakes

Instructions:

Melt the red candy melts according to package directions and pour into lollipop molds. Set in freezer for 5 minutes, then pop out.

Place the edible image on the pops, then using a #5 tip, pipe an outline of red frosting around the image. Dip the pop into sanding sugar and let set.

I did the same for the Irredeemable toppers, just with blue candy melts and white frosting.

Place the toppers into cupcakes and serve.

How did you get the images to stick? Did you use water or melted candy?
