Dirt cake/cupcakes
I’m sure you’ve seen this before. It’s super cute on cupcakes that look like flower pots and the like. But for today, HALLOWEEN, I was going for creepy. Ew.
Ingredients:
Chocolate cake
Chocolate frosting
Crushed chocolate cookie crumbs
Chocolate sprinkles
Gummi worms
Start by baking a chocolate cake. I don’t think I need to give you a recipe here, just make a nice regular old one. Also make a batch of chocolate frosting.
Frost the cake and ready your decor. I like to use crushed up cookies for the ‘dirt.’ Just crush up a bunch of Oreos, then throw them in the blender. Yes, cream filling and all.
I also like to add chocolate sprinkles to make it look like little pebbles. Gummi worms are the final creepy touch. You can totally creep this up by adding ‘gravestones’ and even the hands coming out of the ground. A great quick idea is to use Milanos, brilliant!
Again, I didn’t want it too freaky, cause these kids are only 3 years old. Let’s not go nuts. I don’t want to deal with nightmares at 2am, thanks.

Looks great! We made a similar cake once when I was young, but it was a litter box cake. Instead of worms, there were tootsie rolls that had been morfed into looking like, well, you know what. I don’t think hardly anyone at any. 🙂
I love this idea! I’m going to use it for a halloween party I am throwing!
Hi Jenn,
I’ve been searching for ages for a realistic looking grass frosting type deal and happened across you blog post! =D I was just wondering if you could tell me what you used on the cupcakes to make it look so realistic?
thanks for your help,

If you’re talking about the dirt it’s just a mixture of crushed Oreos and chocolate jimmies.
