Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time Brings The Beloved Children’s Book To Life
Many people remember reading Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time as children, the beloved, award-winning book served as the beginning of a non-stop, action-packed adventure that stayed with you through the years. Now Disney has brought a new version to the big screen thanks to visionary director Ava DuVernay.
The film takes viewers along for the ride across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light, and good versus evil, all through the eyes of young Meg Murry played by Storm Reid. A typical middle schooler, she’s the daughter of extraordinary parents—two world-renowned physicists, played by Chris Pine and Gugu Mbwatha-Raw—and she’s the older sister and pal to her uniquely gifted younger brother Charles Wallace, brilliantly portrayed by newcomer Deric McCabe.
After her father’s sudden disappearance four years ago, the family struggles emotionally, until one day—along with their classmate, Calvin, played by Levi Miller—they happen upon meeting three celestial beings that will change their future. Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Whatsit—legends not only in the universe but here on earth—as they’re played by Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, and Reese Witherspoon. The story follows their adventures as they tesser through the universe in search of Meg’s long lost father.
The film is a sensory explosion, full of color and wonder, confidently bringing each scene of the classic book from page to screen. An addition to the story that didn’t exist in the book, was the character of Veronica, played by Rowan Blanchard. The added storyline of a school bully helps define the battle against darkness, and shows that sometimes there are layers to what motivates the darkness to permeate society and the struggle and triumph of humanity.
For fans of the book, the movie remains true—highlighting key parts of the book, while condensing others. The necessary edit allows the story to evolve and move along, taking the viewer deeper into L’Engle’s world. At times the film can get dark, almost scary for younger viewers—but that goes along with L’Engle’s vision all along—the struggle to be a warrior against the darkness.
