Dragon Wing Cupcakes
Between working for Nerdist, Fandango and now Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, I’ve pretty much stopped baking cupcakes like I used to. When there’s not enough time in the world for cupcakes, you know things are busy.
However, there are some requests I just can’t turn down so when I was asked to make Renaissance Faire cupcakes based off of Sarah Kuhn’s script, well how could I refuse? I do my best creative work when I’m given less to go on, just an inkling of an idea. So for these cupcakes I read the script and decided to go with a dragon theme and a few inside jokes.
Dragon wings are easy to do when you have spectacular molds to work with. I try to think of different uses for everyday objects and when I saw a Wilton texture mat that is used normally used for stone walls, it somehow screamed dragon scales to me. That coupled with a beautiful dragon wings silicone mold by Master Molds and a touch of edible pearl dust, and the dragon cupcakes were born.
This is a quick and simple way to decorate cupcakes for a Renaissance Faire, princess or fantasy themed party!

Dragon Wing Cupcakes
Ingredients:
cupcakes, baked and frosted
bright green fondant
edible silver pearl dust
you’ll need:
dragon wing mold
texture mat
decorating brush
2.75″ round cutter
toothpicks
Instructions:
Press the fondant into dragon wing mold, making sure you get it into all the crevices. Pop out and cut away the excess fondant. Let the wings dry out so they become more solid.
Roll out the fondant onto the texture mat, pressing down to make sure all the details are captured. Release from the mold and using the round cutter, cut out circles of the textured fondant. Place onto the frosted cupcakes.
With a clean decorating brush, brush the edible pearl dust onto the fondant circles, and the wings.
Once the wings have hardened slightly, use toothpicks to prop them up onto the tops of the cupcakes to serve.
