Floating Skittles Cake
This isn’t so much a recipe for cake as it is a recipe for magic. To be honest the cake is secondary, the wow-factor is what you’re going for here because let me tell you, there’s nothing like seeing a child’s face when they walk into the room and see this cake. It will bring you just as much mutual instant joy.
I’ve seen other cakes like this on Pinterest, most involve frosting as glue and more elaborate ways of getting that candy bag to float. I channeled my architectural skills and wanted to find a way to hold it up with as little support as possible, and as quickly as possible. There’s nothing like kids chomping at the bit for cake, too many elements can equal disaster. Skewers are a baker’s best friend.
If you don’t want to bake a cake from scratch just go buy a plain one at the market and add the flourish, either way this floating bag of Skittles will capture your guests’ imagination.
Floating Skittles Cake
Ingredients:
1 frosted 8-inch round layered cake
1 (2.17 oz) bag of Skittles
3 sour strip candies, cut lengthwise
1 skewer
toothpicks
Instructions:
Step 1: Test the length of your skewer to make sure you have enough room for the sour strips to drape onto the cake.
Step 2: Open one end of the Skittles bag. Set aside the empty bag and the candy.
Step 3: Weave toothpicks through one end of three of the cut sour strips, this will be for the front. Repeat with the remaining three cut sour strips, this will be to cover the back of the skewer.
Step 4: Place the two rows of sour strips back to back and intersect the skewer through the toothpicks to secure.
Step 5: Carefully place the open end of the bag over sour strips, covering the toothpicks.
Step 6: Place the skewer into the cake, using the sour strips to cover the skewer.
Step 7: Add Skittles around the sour strips and down the side of the cake.
Step 8: Slice to serve.
