Friday I’m In Love: Honeymee

It’s Friday I’m in Love: things that I adore on a particular week. Not an ad, just a place for me to talk about what I love at this very moment. What I’m eating, buying, loving.

I get a lot of emails from readers planning their vacations in LA and want eating recommendations, and you can bet that there will always be an ice cream place on that list. I spend a lot of time in Koreatown and I’m thrilled that a new ice cream stand Honeymee, just opened in the heart of Wilshire.

Honey topped ice cream is all the rage in Korea right now, so it was just a matter of time before it debuted here in KTown. The menu is simple, luscious Kosher true milk ice cream with various honey toppings. The honey is high quality, fragrant and floral and you’ll wonder why no one’s ever realized what a perfect compliment honey is to ice cream.

The shop is adorable little stand that they somehow jammed under a stairwell that stands out with it’s black and white awning and charming bee theme. In fact, watch out because there are a few real bees buzzing around this place, probably angry at the amount of good quality honey being dished out.

The “Sweetie” is a milk ice cream topped with a liquid honey. The honey is a wonderful compliment and doesn’t overpower the creamy soft serve. It stays soft and sweet, like a lighter version of caramel. Honeymee recently started offereing Sea Salt Honey as a topping, which I can guarantee you is even more fabulous than your tastebuds can imagine.

The namesake “Honeymee” is milk ice cream topped off with a honeycomb chip, while delicious, I’ll say that I found myself spitting out wax for hours afterwards. If you’re cool with that, good on you but from now on I’ll stick to the liquid honey topping.

In addition to ice cream cones and cups, they also offer Baybee Buns filled with ice cream but I suggest sticking with the cups, they’re easier to eat while standing. Since the stand is located next to The Boiling Crab and Wako Donkasu, there are lots of people hanging around and very few sitting spots, so be prepared to stand and eat.

Honeymee is simple and refreshing, and after one cup I felt like I could immediately eat another. Follow the bees, they know where the good stuff is.
