Friday I’m In Love: Jus’ Poke
It’s Friday I’m in Love: things that I adore on a particular week. Not an ad, just a place for me to talk about what I love at this very moment. What I’m eating, buying, loving.
I have a confession, I may be the only person with family in Hawaii who doesn’t eat raw fish. I know, I know, it’s a horrible. Meanwhile, most people in general love sushi/sashimi and there’s no other dish full of flavor more reminiscent of the islands than poke.
Poke is a raw fish salad seasoned with salt, soy, sesame and ogo. It can be served as a side dish or eaten as a meal, the latter taking on popularity. Poke joints are popular in Hawaii but here in LA it’s been pretty desolate, until now. Jus’ Poke in Redondo Beach opened the perfect location, a tiny shop that like the name sells Jus’ Poke! Blocks from the beach you can easily pick up a plate lunch and head to the ocean in minutes. Beach day to-go!
Their regular Poke lunches most definitely pack a punch: original, Spicy Poke, California Roll Poke, Wasabi Poke and Shoyu Poke are always available. Lucky for me, Jus’ Poke also offers up Tofu Poke as a vegan alternative! Sacrilege, believe me I know but the flavors are so fabulous it’s just as good as the real thing…well, to people who don’t eat meat obviously.
In addition to rice you are given a choice of sides and both the seaweed salad and pickled cucumbers are incredible. The Hawaiian Chips are bagged crispy kettle style chips and a perfect side if you’re on the go. They also offer Spam Musubi and various Hawaiian drinks and desserts.
Jus’ Poke’s plate lunches are abundant, light and refreshing. If you’re looking to fill that void of a Hawaiian island vacation, I say fill it with food and the tastes of the island, the ideal lunch for a summer beach day.
