Frozen Anna and Elsa Cookies

Disney’s Frozen hasn’t lost steam and is still extremely popular, so much so that Frozen merchandise continues to fly off the shelves. Back when I made Olaf donuts I knew I wanted to attempt Anna and Elsa in some sort of dessert form. Luckily I came across these adorable Frozen cookie cutters from Francesca4me on etsy.

These cookies may look complicated but when I create recipes I try to make them as simple as possible so they can be easily recreated. Many readers have said they don’t like to make cookie cutter cookies because they don’t want to waste time icing them nor do they want to eat all that frosting. By dyeing dough or adding a few key elements it’s easy to make cookies that are beautiful but still delicious.

Anna Elsa Cookies

For the Elsa cookie I only added an edible shimmer and a light glaze for her hair with a kitchen paintbrush, no precision necessary! A sparkling gel gave her dress a touch of color. As for Anna, she is a puzzle of different colored doughs, a sugar cookie face with a dyed pink dough as her shawl, and a ginger flavored cookie dough making up her iconic braids.

As is these cookies already have wonderful features, but simply add just a few touches of color to the eyes and suddenly they look just like their animated counterparts! Whether or not you add the eye details, these cookies are perfect for a princess party or make a wonderful surprise afternoon snack. Both kids and adults who love Frozen will adore these treats!

Frozen Anna and Elsa Cookies

Ingredients:

vanilla cookie ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 Tablespoon vanilla

brown sugar ginger cookie ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ginger
pinch of salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1-1/2 cups brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
orange food gel dye

Anna’s pink shawl cookie ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
pinch of salt
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 Tablespoon vanilla
pink food gel dye

elsa’s hair:
1/4 cup powdered sugar
2-3 teaspoons water, as needed
edible luster dust

additional decoration:
blue edible pen
white icing
black icing

Instructions:

For all the doughs, follow these same directions:

Whisk the dry ingredients together in a bowl and set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer cream the butter and the sugar. Add the egg and vanilla. (If you’re adding color, add in the gel dye here.)

Slowly add the dry ingredients and mix well, when the dough pulls away from the side of the mixing bowl, it’s done!

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate. For this particular cookie you will only need HALF of each dough. Freeze the other halves for later.

Roll out the vanilla dough to about 3/8 of an inch. Detailed cookie cutters always need a little help so make sure you always dip it in flour before each use, then press down to get a clean impression.

Frozen Elsa cookies

For Elsa: Cut out the cookies and place on a silpat. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, let cool on a wire rack.

Using a clean kitchen paintbrush add the edible luster dust to Elsa’s hair.

In a small bowl mix together the powdered sugar and water until you get a thin consistency and paint over the edible dust. For additional shine, add more luster dust on top of the glaze once it’s dried.

Frozen Anna cookies

For Anna: Cut around the hairline and around the face. You are going to discard the rest of the body and hair. You should be left with a vanilla dough impression of her face, only. Place on a silpat lined baking sheet.

Moving on to her hair, roll out the brown sugar ginger dough to 3/8″ and cut along the hairline once again to get just the hair and the braids. Carefully line that up next to the vanilla face.

For the shawl roll the pink dough to 3/8″, make the impression then cut around the missing body area. Lay all the pieces between the hair and the face to complete the puzzle. Once this bakes it will form into one complete cookie.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake for 10 minutes. Let cool slightly then move to a wire rack to completely cool.

Step by Step Cookie Eyes

Eyes: Use the edible blue ink pen to add a touch of blue to the iris of the eyes.

Using a #2 tip with white icing, fill out the whites of the eyes.

With a #2 tip and black icing go in and fill out the pupils, then draw a line from the inside of the eye, over the top to the outer corner.

Once the eyes are dry, the cookies are ready to go!
