giant Hello Kitty Spam Musubi

Why eat a regular Spam Musubi when you can eat one in the shape of Hello Kitty’s head??

This is similar to the Hello Kitty sushi head that I made for New Year’s but here the rice is plain and the filling is just spam – therefore this recipe is much easier. Except for the whole making of the Hello Kitty facial features of course. Hey, perfectionists unite!

ingredients:
1 can Spam
3 cups cooked rice
soy sauce
sugar
1 egg, cooked scrambled
furikake

Open a can of Spam and cut into 8 slices.

Place the cut slices in a pan – drizzle with soy sauce, and sprinkle liberally with sugar. Turn over and do the same to the other side. NOW turn the pan on to medium high heat.

I like to cook it until the sugar gets good and caramelized and you get a nice sticky teriyaki color on the outside. Turn them to make sure the other side cooks the same. Take them out of the pan and set them aside.

The Hello Kitty mold works like a musubi press or springform pan. Scoop half of the rice into the press, layering it evenly, then push the press down to get the rice flat.

(*important: set aside ONE spam slice for later, this will be the bow.)
Layer the spam onto the pressed rice – cutting up pieces if necessary.

Spoon the remaining rice on top of the spam layer and press flat again.

Using the slice of spam that you set aside, use the template to cut out the bow.

Make the nose the same way using the template, but with the cooked egg.

Place the template on top of the rice and sprinkle furikake for the eyes and whiskers – then put the egg nose and Spam bow into place.

Yep, world’s cutest Spam Musubi right here!
