Godzilla cake

The Baby wanted a Godzilla cake for his birthday and sculpting kaiju out of cake, so not my thing. So I thought what if I took a Godzilla figure but had him surrounded by a city of cake? Sounds reasonable. Well not really, but I thought maybe all those years of building architectural models might be able to help me out. I’m much more comfortable bakingg buildings than large fire breathing monsters.

Ingredients:

2 9×13 sheet cakes
buttercream frosting
chocolate fondant
white fondant
yellow gel dye
black gel dye
graham crackers (for sand)
blue sprinkles (for water)

Instructions:

First I laid out a plan, every good designer has a plan right? I wanted to get a vision on how the height of the cake buildings work in relation to Godzilla himself. Once the cityscape was laid out, I was ready to go.

Godzilla cake stack

I cut and stacked the cake at varying heights according to the plan and to see how the figure would fit. This Godzilla figure was short, so a two stack of cake was sufficient. I created all the cake buildings off to the side and then moved them into placing them before serving.

Once everything was laid out I quickly crumb coated the cake with frosting, enough to help the fondant adhere. Then I rolled out the fondant to a size that easily draped over the cake.

With the fondant was over the cake, I smoothed the corners and cut off any excess. Since I was also going for more of a cartoon-like look I wasn’t worried about sharp edges. I used simple gray and yellow dyed fondant to add details to the buildings, as well as smoke stacks and turrets out of the same color fondant to give the roof a little more depth.

To ready the cityscape, I used a baking sheet to lay out the plan and rolled out dyed gray fondant for the street paving. Once that was down I moved the cake buildings onto their sites.

By adding landscape details like blue sprinkles for water, crushed graham crackers for sand, it gave the city a little bit more life.

There you have it, a completed Godzilla cake! To which the Baby said, “YAY. WHEN DUZ HE SMASH IT ALL?” Uh…I realized that I had just built an architectural model. Not so much “Godzilla destroys the city” as “Godzilla goes out for a leisurely stroll to see the sights.” In the end the guests ate the cake and the Baby got his ‘smashed’ city. I think Godzilla felt a bit of satisfaction too.

This is hilarious and so perfect for a children’s party where the cake inevitably does get absolutely destroyed. You’re so creative! When he gets older I guess you can make a Cloverfield Monster cake 😉 or add Mothra.

This is so cool – I am wondering if I can adapt it to a lego batman theme for my boy. I’ve never done fondant before. Is it easy to work with? where might i find premade stuff. How does the stuff taste? Keep up the great work.

Thanks for showing how you did this cake. I am going to attempt a cake for my son’s first birthday, we nicknamed him Gojira (aka Godzilla) so we wanted to make a cake model of Boston for him to destroy. I had no idea really how to go about it, but this has given me some ideas 🙂

    Great job!

  5. Finally! We have been on the lookout for information on lego for some time and discovered it, my son should be ecstatic!

It is the best time to make a few plans for the long run and it is time to be happy. I’ve read this submit and if I could I want to recommend you some interesting things or tips. Perhaps you can write next articles regarding this article. I desire to read more issues approximately it!

  7. of course like your web-site however you need to take a look at the spelling on several of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very bothersome to tell the truth on the other hand I’ll certainly come again again.

Love that cake, Jenn. I would eat the hell out of that city. I’m glad to see OG 1954 version of Godzilla, too!

what type of cake recipe did you use to hold the fondant and buttercream? Everytime I do a cake it just crumbles the minute I put the buttercream on it
