How To Assemble A Game of Thrones Cheese Board
Game of Thrones is having a banner final season and with the Battle of Winterfell coming up, a cheese board felt appropriate. Cheese boards can be any theme, no theme, or cheese themed—perhaps that’s the best theme of all.
When it comes to a cheese board (or charcuterie board) there’s no wrong way to do it. I like to arrange mine with a mix of textures and colors, just so it looks vibrant and appetizing.
To assemble a cheese board I start with either a sturdy cutting board or a long plate. I tend to like to make mine elongated, like a long buffet of snacks that seemingly never ends.
I start with fruit because that’s always the most colorful, and it gives me inspiration as to where I want to start. I mix it up with fresh fruits and dried fruits: cranberries and dried apricots are great and take up minimal space. If the fresh fruit I choose is too large, I cut it down to manageable pieces, pears and oranges are always lovely.
From there I choose my cheeses based on texture. A mix of soft and hard cheeses, depending on your preference.
Next, crackers. I love a good cracker and I tend to choose based on which will hold up the best with cheese I’ve chosen. Shape is important too, as you start to place the items down, the shapes of the foods will start guiding your direction and placement.
Anything pickled, I’m all for. And I can’t live without cornichons, Spanish olives, Kalamata on a bed of Feta—I’ll take it all.
Meats can be added as well and I usually go with a sturdy prosciutto or salami.
To top it all off, I always add an element of sweet. I can’t help myself. I know when I eat a lot of savory food, a small bit of sweetness makes me feel complete. So I like to add a few fresh baked cookies or bit of chocolate. Not too much, just enough to satisfy.
For this cheese board I made Game of Thrones House Stark cookies using my tried and true sugar cookie recipe. Cookie cutters makes it easy to add a theme after you’ve done all the hard work of assembly.
And that’s how I put together my cheese board, let me know what you like to use in the comments below!
