The Hundred-Foot Journey
“Food is memories” – The Hundred-Foot Journey
I can’t resist a good movie about food and family, the two subjects easily go hand in hand. You learn, live and love through food, and family is a huge influence on that.
The Hundred-Foot Journey is about a young Indian chef named Hassan Kadam, played by Manish Dayal and his literal and metaphorical life’s journey that comes full circle in just one hundred feet.
Hassan and his family settle into a tiny town in the South France and open their Indian restaurant right across the street, 100 feet to be exact, from a Michelin-starred classic French restaurant. The film stars Helen Mirren as Madame Mallory, the owner of the French restaurant and along with Manish Dayal, Charlotte Le Bon as Hassan’s friend and adversary. The two young chefs live and breathe the art of cooking. Om Puri plays Papa, who brings humor and heart to the story of food and family.
As Madame Mallory and Papa battle it out, they find they have more in common than they thought and through it all Hassan finds that his path as a “cook” takes him not only across the 100 feet, but as far as he can dream. “Food is memories” is a theme throughout the movie and it evokes the characters soaring futures and distant dreams.
The beautiful plates of food in every scene are glorious in color and you can almost taste each bite as it’s set out on screen. From traditional succulent Indian food to the starched white-linen perfection of a French dish, every meal is gorgeous and takes the viewer into their own foodie reverie. Even the simplest cheese plate becomes radiant on the big screen.
Based on Richard Morais’ 2011 novel, The Hundred-Foot Journey is a Dreamworks picture directed by Lasse Hallstrom and produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. The Hundred-Foot Journey is rated PG and arrives in theaters everywhere on August 8th!
