Hunger Games Catching Fire cupcakes
Last year my friends held their very own Hunger Games and in honor the event I made Mockinjay cupcakes. This year the games continued and I knew I wanted to incorporate elements of the second book, Catching Fire.
In the book they talk about chocolate cake and there is also description throughout about flowers, I especially remember yellow ones. I decided to make chocolate cupcakes and place them in little flower pots to serve. I created yellow fondant flowers and to top it off, a chocolate Mockingjay for good luck.
This year’s games was intense. You had three flags on a belt, and once another tribute grabbed them and they were gone, you were ‘dead’. The event was also pretty water heavy, complete with a giant pool and flowing acid rain (outdoor spray hose). I felt comfortable in my choice of not participating in the reaping and instead being a member of the Capitol and choosing to sit in the shade and eat cupcakes. Capitol life ain’t so bad.
ingredients:
chocolate cupcakes
chocolate ganache
1 sleeve Oreo cookies
24 (2-1/2 inch) flower pots
yellow food gel dye
fondant
1/2 pound chocolate
Take the cooled cupcakes and dip the tops in ganache to cover. Set aside.
In a blender or food processor, crush the Oreos coarsely, you want it to look like dirt! Sprinkle the crushed cookie mixture on top of the ganache and place the cupcakes in the mini flower pots. Set aside.
To make the flowers use yellow food get dye to color fondant. Take small balls of the fondant and press them into a flower candy mold. Definitely time consuming but great for the effect of tiny flowers of varying textures.
Once those dry out slightly place them on top of the ‘cookie dirt’ topped cupcakes.
For the Mockingjays melt chocolate down and pour it into a silicone mold.
Place the mold in the freezer for 4 – 5 minutes and the chocolate will pop out with all the beautiful detail.
Place the chocolate Mockingjays on top of the flowers and the cupcakes are ready!
May the odds be ever in your favor!
those look delicious! How do you keep the chocolate from getting all speckled after it’s been melted and hardened again? That happens to me every time.
