Kalbi (Korean Ribs)

This is definitely not a traditional Korean kalbi recipe, why? Because of my super secret ingredient, a can of Sprite! Sure it’s sacrilege but it’s also ridiculously delicious. Your guests will wonder how your ribs became so flavorful. Don’t tell them the secret. It’s almost embarrassing. One thing’s for sure, you’ll find yourself making this more and more upon request once they taste it!

Kalbi (Korean Ribs)

Ingredients:

3 pounds short ribs
1 (12 oz) can sprite
1 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon sesame oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Instructions:

In a bowl combine the Sprite soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and pepper.

Place the ribs in a plastic one gallon freezer bag and pour the marinade in. Place the bag into a dish in case of leaks and keep in the fridge for 6-8 hours or overnight.

On a hot grill, cook the meat through 5-7 minutes each side. Serve immediately.

I use sprite in my pilipino bbq too, i’ve been looking for a good kalbi recipe though and I will definitely have to try this out when we’re out in the islands and costco and sam’s sells the ribs for nearly dirt cheap!!!! although just going to tasty’s or yummy’s might just be easier!

I started marinating on Thursday and we cooked last night. YUMMY! We noticed there was no salt in the recipe so we through in a couple sprinkles of Hawaiian salt. Which made it perfect. Could it be b/c we use low sodium soy sauce? I was just wondering why you didn’t have salt in your recipe. I experimented a bit too and made the cold long rice noodles, just like at the Korean plate lunch places here in the islands, and it was spot on!!!

Just wanted to let you know that my family LOVED the galbi. I substituted 1/2 cup of honey for the 1/2 cup of sugar. I added the other 1/2 cup of sugar, though. I also added more green onion because I had a lot (hello, 10 for $1.00 at my local korean market.) but my people loves them some green onion, so I actually added 2 entire bunches. Two thumbs up ALL the way. Thanks for your recipes. I also tried the teriyaki salmon but I lacked the mirin so I went ahead and used sake. My hubs really enjoyed that one. Please keep adding more recipes so we can learn what it takes to get kids, as well as big kids to eat.

did this recipe today for a bbq, and it turned out so good! i used a regular soy sauce (followed the recipe, except maybe added too many sesame seeds), and i didn’t have to add extra salt. the ribs taste very good. i’ll do this again when i have a get-together with my friends.

Yay! finally a kalbi recipe. this looks easy enough that I can’t screw up. I’m going to attempt it this weekend for our BBQ.

wow, I can’t believe I made kalbi!!! I used flank steak because I happened to have it, and it was so easy to cut up tiny for my son to eat. He REALLY enjoyed it! We ate the beef first, had enough, then ate the rice afterwards. Thanks for a recipe that we all could eat! Your slow-cooker pork chops might be next in line…
