Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Shows How Our Differences Make Us Stronger

October is the time of year for villains to shine and no one has quite the stage presence like Maleficent. The quintessential villain, Maleficent’s origin story was given a refresh with 2014’s Maleficent and now the queen returns five years later for even more action and adventure.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil catches up with Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) and her loyal shapeshifter Diaval (Sam Riley) still overlooking her goddaughter Aurora (Elle Fanning) who has become betrothed to her true love, Prince Philip (Harris Dickinson). Like all good unions, families must meet, and like a overly stressful Thanksgiving dinner, things go awry.

As with all fairy tales, things are not as they seem as Prince Phillip’s mother Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) sets a plan in motion that will not only destroy the kingdoms of and the Moors, but ruin the relationship between Maleficent and her daughter.

This movie delves into Maleficent’s backstory, giving insight into where she got her powers. She meets another dark fey named Conall (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who helps Maleficent realize that she truly embodies two worlds both physically and emotionally.

As with the first film, this is a story about family, and how embracing differences can become our greatest strength. The push and pull between the three women—Maleficent, Aurora, and Queen Ingrith—is the heart of the movie. Elle Fanning gives life to Aurora and has brought the character into her own as she grows and tackles adulthood in this second film. While Michelle Pfieffer easily joins the established cast, playing the role of the Queen with so much tension, you are constantly on the edge of your seat wondering how far she will go. As always, Angelina Jolie embodies the iconic villainess with such a fierceness and loyalty, it makes the viewer enraptured by her very being as if under a spell themselves.

In Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, family means more than blood, it means understanding and acceptance. A familiar but modern fairy tale full of adventure, betrayal, and true love.
