Monster Rice Balls
Around Halloween time I always like to put fun recipes on the kid’s plates. The boys love Japanese rice balls so I made these with fun monster faces and scary surprise center…
ingredients:
1 cup Japanese white rice, cooked
1/2 cup Purple Sticky Rice, cooked
for faces:
nori (Japanese seaweed) sheets
String Cheese
I found this Purple Sticky Rice and I knew it would be just the creepy (yet edible) thing I needed for a Halloween meal.
Lay out a sheet of plastic wrap and place about 1/4 cup cooked white rice, pushing it out flat. Add a spoonful of the Purple Sticky Rice right in the center, then pull up the edges of the plastic wrap.
Squeeze the plastic wrap to form a ball with your hands. Undo the plastic wrap and you’ll have a perfectly shaped rice ball!
For the face I cut string cheese on the perpendicular to make rounds.
Then I cut up some nori sheets using food punches for circles, jagged teeth, etc.
Freeform the faces however you want…
…or let the kids give it a go.
The kids will be surprised to see a colorful center of purpley rice, but you can fill it with anything, salmon, chicken, whatever you like. It’s a lot of fun for Halloween or any day of the year!
