Pineapple spareribs

Cleaning out my cookbooks, I found the “Hawaiian Air Flight Attendants Cookbook.” Who knew this book even existed? I love the retro pictures that seem incredibly sexist:

You can’t deny a good beehive hairdo, though. All the sepia toned photos are a fun moment in time to look at and the recipes seem like they’d stand up pretty well even in this day and age.

One standout was a tasty sounding recipe for Pineapple Spareribs. I changed it up to update it and decided to change the preparation to a crock pot to make life easier. If crock pots aren’t your thing (they should be though because they’re fun and easy to use) you can easily make this in the oven, just bake at 350 degrees for two hours.

After all those hours in the crock pot, the meat was flavorful and falling off the bone. The kids absolutely loved this dish and now it’s on my weekly dinner rotation. The same sauce can even be used for chicken. Old school recipes are definitely worth a try!

Pineapple spareribs

Ingredients:

2 pounds pork spare ribs
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup pineapple juice
1/2 cup orange juice
1/3 cup soy sauce
1 clove garlic, minced
2 slices of ginger
salt and pepper
3/4 cup pineapple chunks

Instructions:

In a small bowl stir together the apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, pineapple juice, orange juice, soy sauce, garlic, and ginger slices.

Place the ribs in the crock pot. Pour the sauce over the ribs, season with salt and pepper.

Cover and turn crock pot on to low for 8 hours. When you are ready to serve, add the pineapple chunks.

I’m going to have to try this one. YUM! Then again, they are all yum.

    More please.

Oh My! That is the best cookbook in the whole world. It might even be better than my Cooking With Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters book or Cooking with David Letterman’s Mom.

I don’t make ribs very often, but we went out for dinner the other night and my daughter asked the waitress for an order of ribs. She loved them. I’ll try these when I get my crockpot out of storage.

Hi Jenn, do you prefer the crockpot version or the baked? Is it possible to post the baking instructional too (temp & time)? Wanting to make this asap, but no crock pot handy right now -would love to bake this up. It sounds delicious! I have to take kids’ word for it, they are definitly honest when it comes to good food! LoL =)

Hm, preference? Not really. Both work fine, it’s just about how much time you have. I’ve added to the recipe if you want to put them in the oven.

Pork or beef? I would love to know what that is beside the carrots! 😉

I like pork ribs the best.
Next to the carrots is a creamy fruit salad made with creme fraiche – recipe, here.
