Wreck-It Ralph Logs In To A Whole New World In Ralph Breaks the Internet
Disney’s 2012 Wreck-It Ralph is one of my favorite movies of all time. It had all the elements that pull at my heartstrings—family, friendship, and candy—yes, candy gives me all the feels. So to say that I was excited for a sequel would be an understatement. And now with Ralph Breaks the Internet, Ralph and Vanellope are finally back on the big screen for more adventures.
A lot has changed in 6 years, in the real world and the animated one. Ralph (voice of John
C. Reilly) may be happy resting on his laurels—drinking at Tappers, killing time in retro video games—but Vanellope (voice of Sarah Silverman) has always been the one with a wild streak who craves adventure. Through a series of mishaps, the two BFFS leave the security of Litwak’s Arcade and venture out into the internet in an attempt to save Vanellope’s game, Sugar Rush.
Leading them through these unknown realms are new characters: Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson) the head algorithm of the trend-making site “BuzzzTube,” and Shank (voice of Gal Gadot), a racer in an online game called Slaughter Race.
A welcome addition to the madness of a new world is the venture into Disney-dom. Heading into Oh My Disney is super meta, and brings about some of the best scenes in the movie, with Disney Princesses clearly stealing the show.
All these new characters and new locales mean that Ralph and Vanellope are faced with new challenges including their own friendship. At its core, this movie is about change and whether you are ready and willing to accept it. This is an interesting take on relationships and a metaphor for the ever changing world online.
Directed by Rich Moore (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph”) and Phil Johnston (co-writer “Wreck -It Ralph,” “Zootopia,” writer, “Cedar Rapids”), and produced by Clark Spencer (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Bolt,” “Lilo & Stitch”), this world feels larger and overwhelming for our heroes, much like the real-life internet.
The humor and heart of the first movie is definitely still there and kids will love the current meme-worthiness of it all. Watching a friendship being tested—be it animated or real life—can be hard, but staying true to one’s self is important and has always been a key part of every Disney movie.
Make sure you stay through the credits to the very end, you won’t be disappointed! Check out Ralph Breaks the Internet, now open in theaters today!
