Sarah Kuhn’s Heroine’s Journey Cupcakes
Since the release of her first books Heroine Complex and Heroine Worship, my friend Sarah Kuhn has been on a journey and I’ve been right there with her. Now the heroic trio of books is complete with the launch of Heroine’s Journey.

Though I don’t sell baked goods (and I never will, I only bake for the internet), when she releases these books into the universe she asks me to create cupcakes for her launch parties. How could I say no to celebrating Asian-American superhero characters? I usually read through the book to get inspiration for flavors and designs but this go-round I knew right from the cover what I was planning to make.
Inspired by The Ripped Bodice—”America’s first all-romance bookstore“—where she spends her days writing, she introduced a furry sidekick into this book, a tiny one-eyed dog called Pancake, named after Fitz Williams Waffles aka the real bookstore dog. This dog is so popular he even has his own instagram account.
I knew this cover dog was to be the centerpiece of these book launch cupcakes. I commissioned a custom made cookie cutter from Tree Little Tree on etsy, got to baking and decorating, then placed them onto cupcakes, and the rest was history.
Happy books, happy cupcakes, happy summer reading everyone!

Sarah Kuhn’s Heroine’s Journey Cupcakes
Ingredients:
you’ll need:
custom cookie cutter
black icing
white icing
heart sprinkles
frosted cupcakes
cookie ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch of salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions:
In a bowl whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.
In the bowl of an electric mixer cream the butter and the sugar. Add the egg and vanilla.
Add the flour mixture until combined. When it pulls away from the sides of the bowl, the dough is ready.
Wrap up the dough in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until you are ready to use.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with parchment or silpats.
Roll out the dough and use the cookie cutter to cut out shapes.
Place the cookies on the prepped cookie sheets.
Bake for 10 minutes, let cool on a wire rack.
Use a clean kitchen paintbrush to add the white icing for his fur.
With a #3 tip and black icing, pipe the eyes and nose.
Go back in and add white teeth details, and a heart sprinkle for his collar.
When the icing is dry, place the finished cookies onto frosted cupcakes and serve!
