Shave Ice Cupcakes
**I’m proud to announce that my Shave Ice Cupcakes were featured on the cover of the June 2012 issue of Food Network Magazine!
First birthdays are HUGE in Hawaii, they’re practically as planned and as big as weddings. My friend Cheryl wanted a Luau themed first birthday party in the height of summer. When heat is that bad, how can you keep Hawaiian Shave Ice from melting? Make Shave Ice Cupcakes!
I came up with this idea when I saw sanding sugar in traditional Hawaiian shave ice rainbow colors: red, yellow and blue. They fine sugar sparkles in the sun and looks exactly like real shave ice. Lined up, they make a great addition to any summer dessert table. Best of all, they’ll never melt!
Shave Ice Cupcakes
Ingredients:
frosted cupcakes
red sanding sugar
blue sanding sugar
yellow sanding sugar
4 oz styrofoam cups
red cocktail straws
wooden spoons
Instructions:
The key to making these look like shave ice is to go with the typical ‘rainbow’ shave ice colors.
Start by sprinkling the yellow sanding sugar carefully down the middle of the cupcake.
Then add the red on one side and the blue on the other.
To make these look realistic, once the cupcakes are frosted and sugared place them in 4 oz Styrofoam cups. Add a thin red cocktail straw and a wooden spoon.
wow so cute!

These are absolutely amazing! I’ve suddenly found the perfect answer to “what kind of cupcake decoration” I’ll be using in a few weeks for my daughter’s 1st birthday party! THANK YOU!
I love this concept! It’s a “cool” treat. I am going to give it a try for my son’s 1st bday luau in August.
I just couldn’t depart your web site prior to suggesting that I really enjoyed the standard info an individual provide to your visitors? Is gonna be back often to investigate cross-check new posts
Did Food Network take this off of your website or do you work for them? It is an exact match! I was wondering where to get the cool wooden spoons!
Thanks!
i love this .. am going to make it for my friends at the convelescent center.. they will love it. where can i buy the sticks?
Hello from another 2-n Jenn!
It may be a silly question because I am sure the wooden spoons are a harder find, but where did you find the perfect sized Styrofoam cups? I am an avid Food Network mag reader; congrats on being featured, these are just too cute!
I am also curious on where you found the Styrofoam cups!!
I got the small styrofoam cups at Smart and Final and the wooden spoons from a fabulous online store called The Webstaurant store!
You container of sanding sugar looks pretty big. How much do you actually use for 24 cupcakes? Just trying to figure out how much I should buy. Thanks!
These are wonderful looking! Such a simple idea but still awesome.
