Should You Take Your Kids To See Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out?

Disney/Pixar has a long history of emotional storytelling and knowing just how to get you right in the childhood memories. Their movies are beautiful love letters to our youth and Inside Out is no exception. Both parents and kids will connect with the characters and story but on different levels, from the perspective of a parent looking back and a child looking to the future. To be honest, this movie hurts.

Think of the saddest part of the Toy Story trilogies (you know the scenes I’m talking about) and crank the sadness to ten. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely loved Inside Out, but it most definitely worked all the main emotions portrayed in the film. There were times when you can’t help but be swept up in Joy’s enthusiasm and who can’t relate to Anger completely losing it? The sad scenes are absolutely heartbreaking and may be difficult for some kids to handle.

Inside Out

I’d recommend this movie for kids 7 and up and even then parts of the movie may need some explanation. Depending on your child, the storyline still may be a little touch and go with older children, because just like in the movie, older kids and adults are even more in touch with their emotions – as proven by the fact that I was a bawling mess through most of it. Yes, I even cried during the opening short, Lava.

The story centers around the five Emotions in 11-year old Riley’s mind, lighthearted optimist Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), hot-headed Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and the ever-convincing Sadness (voiced by Phyllis Smith).

When Riley’s family moves to a new city Emotions take over quite literally, and anyone who’s lived with a kid heading into their tween stages can tell you, it sure isn’t easy.

Inside Out is a wonderful film that fully reflects the characters Anger, Disgust, Fear, Sadness and Joy but just to warn you, you’ll definitely need a box of tissues to get you through this emotional journey.

I went to a screening of Disney/Pixar Inside Out. No monetary compensation was provided. All opinions are my own.

    SPOILER ALERT- SORRY IN ADVANCE!
I saw this and it was truly amazing!!!!! I went with my 12 (turning 13) yr old girl, and she perfectly related with this. She connected deeply with Riley since they are around the same age, and remembers that empty feeling when going to a new school or, in Riley’s case, to a different state. I need to take out my old psychology books to remember the meanings of some terms said in the abstract thought section! I actually recommend for ages 7 and up too, or maybe even 8-9 plus! My daughter wouldn’t understand it younger than 8, but that’s just her. You might want to tell your kid a bit about puberty first if they’re a bit younger. It comes up a few times. It may be easier for younger kids to comprehend if they have an older sibling that’s 10+. It did make both me and my daughter cry, especially when Riley’s islands one by one crash down, and (for me especially) when Bing Bong saves Joy! Sorry if I spoiled a bit…tried not to spoil too much.
