Sleeping baby cupcakes

Shh, the babies are sleeping…under blankets made out of Starburst! Now those are sweet dreams.

These sleeping baby cupcakes are always a hit at showers. They look complicated but it’s just a matter of assembly. A cookie head, a bed of marshmallow and Starburst blanket. They smell heavenly sweet and look adorable on a party dessert table.

Ingredients:

cupcakes (very vanilla cupcakes)
frosting (whipped cream cheese frosting)
mini nilla wafers
little pink heart quins
melted chocolate or black frosting
marshmallows
Starburst candies

Instructions:

Using a #2 tip, pipe faces using the black frosting onto the Mini Nilla Wafers. Piping hair really made these stand out. Make some babies bald and add hair to others. Use a heart quin for the mouth.

cupcake babies marshmallow prep

Cut a marshmallow in half and lay them in a ‘T’ formation on top of the frosted cupcakes. One side will be the pillow for the head, the other will be the body under the blanket. Use another dollop of frosting to secure the Nilla Wafer ‘heads’ onto the top marshmallow.

roll out Starburst

In a glass bowl microwave two pieces of unwrapped Starburst for only 6-8 seconds, just to soften the consistency. Between two sheets of wax paper or plastic wrap, roll out the Starburst into a square, and cut to fit the size of a blankie for the baby. Use an alternate color to do the top of the blanket. Use clean crafting scissors to make scalloped blanket edges.

To an add even more decor on the blankets add Teddy Grahams as little bedtime buddies. Secure the Starburst blankets onto the bottom marshmallow with a touch of frosting.

Now your cupcake babies are ready to serve!

My oldest child is looking at this and saying “I want to eat the baby” while laughing an evil laugh, LOL! Seriously, I have a lot of respect for people who have the patience to do this. I made choo choo train cupcakes that involved tootsie rolls once, years and years ago. I’ve never wanted to repeat the experience. These are really cute though. They would be a fun Sunday School project.

Someone at the party we made them for warned us that starburst can blow up in the microwave if you’re not careful though- that’s one mess I don’t want to clean up!
