Spam Musubi Hearts For Valentine’s Day

Maybe you’re not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day or maybe Galentine’s Day with your best gal pals is more your speed, either way you can’t deny heart-shaped foods are fun to eat. Candies, cakes, and treats are always hyped up for February 14th but what about the savory snacks?

Spam Musubi is a Hawaii fave, Spam is cooked in a mixture of soy sauce and sugar, then pressed with freshly cooked rice and wrapped in nori for a tasty, portable snack. I decided to do all of those things but add a little love to the process. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter adds the magic touch to show your Spam-loving friends and family how much you care on Valentine’s Day.

Spam Musubi Hearts For Valentine’s Day

Ingredients:

1 can Spam
3 cups cooked rice
soy sauce
sugar

you’ll need:
acrylic sushi press
small heart cookie cutter
nori (seaweed sheets)

Instructions:

Cut can of Spam into 9 slices, evenly. Use the heart cutter to cut out shapes.

Place the Spam heart in a pan, drizzle with soy sauce and sprinkle liberally with sugar. Turn over and do the same to the other side. Turn the pan on to medium high heat.

Cook until the sugar gets caramelized, it should only take a few minutes. Flip over and cook the other side. Remove from pan and set aside.

Wet the press, this will prevent stickage to the rice.

Scoop rice into the press and use the top to press down. Use the same cookie cutter to cut out the heart shapes, this time in the rice.

Place the cooked Spam hearts on top of the pressed rice.

Cut a small strip of nori to wrap around the musubi hearts, to serve.
