Star Wars Chewbacca New Year Mochi Hug Cookies

Happy New Year! Sadly it’s another year without an oshogatsu or mochitsuki but that doesn’t mean it’s a year without cookies. You can still celebrate New Year’s Day at home with mochi, just like Chewbacca.

This year I wrote the Star Wars: The Life Day Cookbook, because of my love of wookiees. They are my inspiration for so many recipes, how can you not love a furry BFF that is willing to pull people’s arms out of their sockets if they wrong you? Loyalty and fuzzy hugs, that’s wookiees in a nutsehll. So it just makes sense that you’d want to have a wookiee by your side on New Year’s Day. These cookies feature the walking carpet himself holding a little kagami mochi made of marshmallows, to ring in the new year. Happy New Year!

Ingredients:

For the cookies:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla

You’ll need:
Black icing
White icing
Miniature marshmallows
Orange icing
Green icing

Instructions:

Step 1: In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.

Step 2: In the bowl of an electric mixer cream the butter and brown sugar until combined.

Step 3: Add the egg and vanilla, then slowly add in the dry ingredients just until the dough comes together.

Step 4: Split the dough into two and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill until you are ready to use.

Step 5: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prep baking sheets with silpats or parchment paper.

Step 6: Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut and press the shapes, then transfer them onto the prepped baking sheets.

Step 7: Place a piping tip in the center of the cookie. Carefully fold the arms over to grasp the piping tip.

Step 8: Bake for 10 minutes, let cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, slowly slide out the piping tip.

Step 9: Use a dab of icing to place the miniature marshmallow in Chewbacca’s hands.

Step 10: With a #5 tip, add a small round ball of orange icing on top of the marshmallow. Use a #3 tip to add a leaf on top with the green icing.

Step 11: With a #4 tip and black icing, add the eye details. Then use a #4 tip and white icing to add the teeth. Once the icing is dry, the cookies are ready to serve.

I am unable to find the chewbacca cookie cutters at THINKGEEK. The website comes up as Game Stop. Can you point me in their direction?

    Thank you.
