Teri Beef Chop Steak

An old local recipe that you’ll see in a lot of Hawaii home cookbooks is chop steak. It’s a cross between a hamburger patty and a meatloaf, basically a hamburger steak and usually topped with gravy.

You know kids, they aren’t much into sauce and gravy but they are into flavor. So I thought making a teriyaki version would give it something special. This is one of the kid’s fave meals and if you make mini versions they make a great bento for lunch.

Teri Beef Chop Steak

Ingredients:

1 lb ground beef
1/2 cup panko (Japanese bread crumbs)
2 Tablespoons soy sauce
2 Tablespoons sugar
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 egg
1 onion, sliced

Instructions:

Step 1: In a bowl mix together the ground beef, panko, soy sauce, sugar, garlic and egg.

Step 2: Shape the meat mixture into six mini oval patties or four large patties.

Step 3: In a pan over medium high heat, cook the patties about 5-7 minutes on one side. Then flip them over and cover the pan with a lid. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until done.

Step 4: Take the chop steaks out of the pan and set aside on a plate. In the same hot pan add the sliced onions and cook down until caramelized.

Step 5: Top the steaks with onions to serve.

Jenn I have Da Best Butter Mochi Recipe to share with you from here in Hawaii.

    16 oz. Mochiko
    4-5 large eggs
    2 cups white sugar
    2-1/2 cups fresh milk
    1/4 cup butter, melted
brown sugar to sprinkle atop before baking

Mix dry ingredients in a bowl, add milk and eggs, stir, then gradually add the melted butter. Stir still no lumps and back in a 350 degree preheated oven for 1/2 hour or till a nice golden brown crust on top. Cool completely, cut into squares and the rest is history. Enjoy!

Made this today but FORGOT THE GARLIC!!! Well, my older son really enjoyed it, and husband did, too. Come to think of it, even the 11 month old ate some! I only made one batch in the pan before my husband complained that it was too greasy, so stuck the rest in the oven. I prefer the greasy and crusty version, but both ways worked for my son. Onions were delicious! I guess I will have to try that butter mochi recipe from Maile, too…

@Erin HP Hm, I don’t have that problem but If it’s greasy, I suggest using a lower fat ground beef.

Mmmm. I think this would be perfect for a bento school lunch. For me too.

truthfully, I did not find the pan way greasy at all–my husband is just kind of over-sensitive about fat. He complains when I cook SPAM Lite, too :).

By the way, the butter mochi recipe Maile posted WAS good! But my husband complained that he missed the blueberries…that’s okay, more for me!!!

Mmmmmm! I had no idea how these were going to taste. Of course, they were delicious. I noticed Target was selling panko (yay!) and remembered this recipe. We had a lot leftover and ate them all week. 🙂
