The Kid’s Chocolate Chip Pancakes
It’s finally time to shut down this blog…apparently the Kid is taking over!
The Kid woke up and announced that HE was going to make breakfast. Sounded good to me. He said he wanted to do EVERYTHING by himself. Hm. He preps with me all the time that’s for sure, but using the stove…I was a little skeptical. He’s 8 years old which is still a little young but I was interested in seeing if he could pull it off. He wanted to make his favorite food, pancakes so we altered my basic pancake recipe to what he wanted and he was off!
ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 Tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1-1/2 cups whole milk
2/3 cup chocolate chips
In a bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.
(He gathered all the ingredients and did all the measuring.)
Make a well in the dry ingredients and add the eggs, vanilla and the milk.
(The Kid broke an egg all by himself for the first time. He quickly found out that it wasn’t all that.)
Stir in the chocolate chips.
(For the Kid’s signature touch, a ‘special’ ingredient to make the recipe all his.)
Place a griddle on medium-high heat and add butter to melt. Ladle out the pancakes.
(I turned on the stove and warned him about burning himself. It’s a gas top so we talked about things easily catching fire, etc.)
When the tiny bubbles on top of the pancakes start to pop, flip the pancakes over and cook until done.
(You know my hatred of ugly pancakes so we talked about how to fix that and how you know when a pancake is ready to flip.)
Finally the pancakes were ready but not without a finishing touch. The Kid has always watched me close when I cook and he obvs picked up on the food styling.
Can we eat? Not yet. Another thing the Kid picked up on is that he can’t eat til I take a picture of the final product for the blog. And so it goes. He arranged his plate and took his shots.
I went through the camera and was pleasantly surprised that his pictures turned out pretty darn good! He can take over this gig for sure.
It was time to eat so he called The Baby to the table, who declared these the ‘best pancakes’ he’s ever eaten. I’m not offended because I was too busy eating them myself. As you can tell, the Baby no longer believes in forks.
Looks like I won’t be giving up the blog just yet. The Kid still can’t reach the high shelves.
How precious is that?!
Encourage that drive, by all means!
My kids never picked up on cooking, so all we can do is hope they have some other talent that will provide them with a living — and a means to provide for their parent’s old age. LOL.
You may have the next Chef Batali or Michael Symon!
The Kid is awesome! It’s great to see him loving to be in the kitchen, so many memories are made there!
That is soooo great!
His pancakes look better than mine. What an excellent chef he is!
So cute. You’ve inspired me to have my eight-year-old nephew make his own mac & cheese the next time he’s over. 🙂
His older brother LOVED cooking/baking with me when he was a toddler/preschooler [in the ‘me do it’ phase, lol], but sadly, my brother’s younger kids have shown no interest so far.
