Thor: Ragnarok Is All About Teamwork

When the cast of Thor: Ragnarok came together to promote the film at last month’s press junket, one word fit the mood—camaraderie. The love the cast felt for each other definitely shows up on screen and the world will get to see just how those friends from work interact, when Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters this Friday.

Marvel Studios Thor: Ragnarok

Director Taika Waititi understood that his strengths were tone, character, and relationships, and putting that heart into the massive beast of a Marvel movie took to the film to another level, giving the audience a Thor they hadn’t seen before.

Not only did Thor change his look, but Chris Hemsworth got to show off the humorous side of the God of Thunder. Attempting to incorporate the Midgardian sarcasm and humor he learned from hanging out with Tony Stark and the Avengers.

Although the movie is a Thor vehicle, Ragnarok is all about teamwork and this time his old pal Hulk is by his side. Hemsworth recounts, “I think, this is my favorite version of the Hulk ‘cause we actually got to act together, you know. We’d only really fought one another on screen in the previous films. And this time around, we got to just sort of improvise our way through it, and sort of invent this chemistry that we hadn’t explored before, and sort of build this new version of the Hulk, which was a little bit more articulate and vocal than he had been prior. And there’s just so much more room for the humor and fun that the character then embodies, that I think it’s fantastic. I loved it.”

You can’t have Thor without his mischievous brother close behind. Since this is a new Thor, do we see a new and improved Loki? It’s hard to say, he’s not called the God of Mischief for nothing.

Tom Hiddleston who plays Loki talked about the character’s evolution, “The development of the relationship between Thor and Loki—his brother—is Thor has evolved, and grown, and matured; and Loki in a way is stuck in his struggles of the past. And that’s, in a way, that’s the challenge for Loki in this, is that he’s got to confront the fact that time is moving on, and people change, and – so I don’t know. I mean, we’ll see. We’ll see. There’s room to grow, and I’m still here. And we’ll see where he goes next.”

To round out the team is the famous Asgardian warrior Valkyrie. Thor looked up to her growing up and Tessa Thompson does such a good job bringing the famed heroine to life, it’s inevitable that fans would long for a solo movie. Addressing the idea, Thompson said she and a few Marvel ladies went straight to the top and asked the man himself, head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige.

Thompson said, “Recently, I marched up with a couple other women that work in Marvel, and we were like, to Kevin, ‘What about a movie with some female superheroes – just like, all of them.” Thompson even cited a precedent in the comics, the Lady Liberators, an all-female superhero team that first appeared in Marvel comics in 1970.
