Wako Donkasu
Wako Donkatsu is a place specializing in katsu which is a Japanese fried cutlet. It’s odd that this Japanese specialty is done so well by a Korean restaurant right in the heart of Koreatown and in a strip mall no less, but it works. In fact, I’ve introduced this place to friends as the “best katsu in town” and now we even have group dinners here that we hashtag #katsuclub.
Katsu is a breaded and deep fried cutlet, it can be pork, beef, shrimp, chicken, they even offer up a cheese katsu for vegetarians. The plates are huge and come with a side of miso soup, rice and two types of kimchi. There is also a giant pile of cabbage that at first you might dismiss, but don’t. The dressing is deliciously addicting and it’s the ideal compliment to the fried katsu. If the massive plates still aren’t enough for you, there are combinations plates where you can add on additional katsu or noodles.
The real fun at Wako is the katsu sauce, it’s an art form. The sauce is homemade but they get you involved by handing out mortart and pestles for you to crush and grind your own sesame seeds. The fragant ground sesame adds a depth of flavor to the sauce and to your katsu. Plus the kids think it’s crazy fun.
Wako Donkasu remains one of my favorite places in Koreatown and I can tell you O.G. aka Queen of all things Fried, LOVED it. That’s recommendation enough right there.
